Bengal Bouts
For nearly 100 years, Notre Dame Men’s Boxing has fundraised for Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh through the Notre Dame charity, the Bengal Bouts. The Bengal Bouts is an initiative with a dual focus. At its core, the Men’s Boxing program at the University of Notre Dame is rooted in charity. The mission of the Bengal Bouts centers around the cultivation of young men who are passionate about becoming champion boxers, as well as men of charity. This mission is carried out not only in spirit and faith, but also in giving. Each year, the Bengal Bouts raise funds for Holy Cross Missions throughout Bangladesh. This initiative was originally founded by Knute Rockne, the legendary head coach of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football (1918—1930).
Notre Dame Men’s Boxing
Notre Dame Men’s Boxing is the largest intercollegiate boxing tournament in the world! A cornerstone of the program is charity; with a focus on the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh. All members of the Notre Dame Men’s Boxing program are men with a drive to become the best boxers they can be and an unwavering commitment to charity. The Annual Bengal Bouts Tournament (and fundraiser) is scheduled for February of each year during the Spring Semester at the University of Notre Dame.
Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh
Dr. Patrick Albergo is a proud supporter of the Bengal Bouts and their message. Dr. Albergo has consistently contributed to the charity year after year, both during the Annual Bengal Bouts Tournament, as well as throughout the year. Dr. Albergo is a firm believer in the incredible work being done by the Holy Cross Priests, Brothers, Sisters and compassionate volunteers who embark on Mission Trips to Bangladesh. A country faced with life in extreme poverty, the Bengali people are economically disadvantaged in the areas of education and health care. Through their presence in remote rural areas of Bangladesh at 13 parishes across the country, the Congregation of the Holy Cross manages schools, churches and healthcare facilities.
Through the initiatives launched and managed by the Bengal Bouts, primary and technical schools, as well as health care clinics, have been built in Bangladesh. These structures not only empower the Bengali people, but enrich their communities overall. Dr. Patrick Albergo is proud to have supported fundraising efforts by the Bengal Bouts which have directly contributed to the health care and education of the Bengali people. As a physician who is passionate about Global Health, Dr. Albergo firmly believes that the Bengal Bouts are helping to make a life-changing and life-saving difference through their support of Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh.
